Ottawa, ON – The Companions of the Cross, a Community of Catholic priests, have appointed Fr. Michael Scherrey, CC as interim General Superior after the resignation of Fr. Allan MacDonald, CC effective July 13, 2019.
“My decision to resign came as a result of prayer, consultation with the Executive Council and Archbishop Prendergast,” said Fr. MacDonald who will be taking personal time off to transition to pastoral ministry within the Companions of the Cross. “I continue to pray for all of us.”
Fr. Allan MacDonald, who recently celebrated his 25th anniversary as priest, was elected General Superior on September 2, 2016. He has also served as Vocations Director and University Chaplain, has assisted with the first year Applicancy Program and has led many missions and parish retreats.
Fr. Michael Scherrey was ordained in 2005 and retired from active ministry in 2017. “I trust that the Holy Spirit will guide me in this new assignment,” said Fr. Scherrey. “On behalf of all the brothers, I’d like to thank Fr. MacDonald for his dedication and leadership.”
The community will elect a new General Superior early next year.
The Companions of the Cross were founded by Fr. Bob Bedard in Ottawa, Ontario, in 1984. What started out as a small group of men meeting weekly has grown into a thriving community of 38 priests, two bishops and 15 seminarians. They serve in Ottawa, Toronto, Halifax, Detroit, and Houston.
