Meditation for discernment

Previous: Be Empowered

Introductory Prayer

(excerpts from Seeking Jesus in Contemplation and Discernment, pp. 16, 77, 104)

Lord Jesus, teach me to pray, to enter into loving interpersonal relationship with you. Teach me to come into loving awareness of your great love for me, of the fact that you call me personally, by name, into an intimate and loving union with you.

Teach me to be conscious of my complete dependence on you and on your love for me. Help me to be aware that you are my fulfillment and my future, that the meaning of my life lies in you.

I do not ask you, Lord, for the wisdom that the world gives, but for your gift of discernment, for the wisdom you give that lovingly sees the source of thoughts and feelings. Give me the discerning wisdom that judges according to your Holy Spirit.

Teach me, Jesus, discernment. Give me and increase in me the gift of listening to your voice, of knowing what is your voice. Make me sensitive and docile to the urgings that come from your Spirit. Let me walk always in your Spirit. Amen.

Scripture Meditation:  The Call to preach Christ crucified

“We preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles,
But to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks,
Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.
For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom,
And the weakness of God is stronger than human strength.
For consider your call, brethren;
Not many of you were wise according to the flesh,
Not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth;
But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise,
God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong,
God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not,
To bring to nothing things that are,
So that no flesh might boast in the presence of God.
He is the source of your life in Christ Jesus,
Whom God made our wisdom, our righteousness and sanctification and redemption;
Therefore, as it is written, ‘Let him who boasts, boast of the Lord.”  (1 Cor 1:23-31)

Concluding Prayer

(excerpts from Seeking Jesus in Contemplation and Discernment, p. 109)

Mary, I ask you to pray for me for the gift of discernment. Intercede for me with Jesus; ask him to give me, and in great abundance, the gift of listening to his voice, of walking in his Spirit, of following him in love. Take me with you to Jesus now.

Jesus, I come to you with your mother, Mary. I ask you for the gift of discernment. You are one in the Holy Spirit with the Father. Make me more one with you in the Holy Spirit. You always listen to the Father; teach me to listen to you. You always do what the Father asks; help me to respond generously to you, saying always “yes” to you. Amen.
