We need to be empowered by the Holy Spirit to minister effectively in God’s Kingdom. Otherwise, it will be a work of the flesh, based on human strength and ingenuity. It will not last. We must become docile to the presence and action of the Holy Spirit who dwells within us.
Mary is the perfect model of docility to the Holy Spirit.
“The angel said to [Mary]… ‘The Holy Spirit will come upon you and the power of the most high will overshadow you. Therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God…. Mary said, ‘Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.’” (Luke 1:35-38)
Prayer of Pope John XXIII to convoke Vatican Council II:
“Divine Spirit, renew your wonders in this our age as in a new Pentecost, and grant that your Church, praying perseveringly and insistently with one heart and mind together with Mary, the Mother of Jesus, and guided by blessed Peter, may increase the reign of the Divine Savior, the reign of truth and justice, the reign of love and peace. Amen.”
